In a move that seemed to catch the entire world off guard, Angelina Jolie’s rep has confirmed to the media that the human rights activist, and award winning actress did indeed file paperwork to end her marriage to the equally famous Brad Pitt this week.
"Angelina Jolie Pitt has filed for dissolution of the marriage. This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting at this time, and asks that the family be given their privacy during this difficult time."
TMZ.com is claiming that Jolie has cited irreconcilable differences, and further claims that the decision to end her 2-year marriage to Pitt can be traced to disagreements over parenting styles, which ultimately affect the couple’s 6 children.
In what is sure to be an extraordinarily public split, few details are available yet, though some sources are reporting that Jolie has asked for sole physical custody of all children, requesting that Pitt have visitation rights only. She has allegedly asked for joint legal custody of their children.
As far as the division of property, assets and wealth is concerned, Forbes.com is reporting that Jolie and Pitt have made more than $550 Million combined in the 12 years since they became a couple. With an estate so large, there is little doubt that the division of assets is going to be cumbersome. That’s to say nothing of the various properties, including a French chateau that the two are purported to own jointly.
