How to be an Effective Co-Parent in San Diego and Still Set Reasonable Boundaries with Your Ex

AdminBlog Posts

Setting clear boundaries with your ex can be one of the best ways to build a healthy Co-parenting relationship during and after family law proceedings in San Diego:

Communication focused on the children:  Co-parenting focuses on the children.  Being a co-parent does not entitle exes to information about each other’s personal lives, except as it may relate to the well-being of the children.

The Certified Family Law Specialists at Primus Family Law Group in San Diego suggest the following tips in setting reasonable boundaries with your ex during and after family law proceedings:

  1. Keep conversations businesslike and focused solely on co-parenting or essential matters. Avoid engaging in casual chitchat or discussions unrelated to parenting responsibilities.
  2. Use email or co-parenting apps to keep conversations in writing and focused only on the children.
  3. Clearly define expectations and what is or isn’t acceptable regarding personal space, communication frequency, and involvement in each other’s lives, other than as it relates to co-parenting the children.
  4. Don’t respond to messages or contact attempts that fall outside communications about the children.
  5. Avoid sharing personal information or details about your life that aren’t directly relevant to co-parenting. Maintain privacy and emotional distance.
  6. Consider setting time limits for when communication is acceptable, such as not after a certain hour unless it’s an emergency.

Remember, boundaries are not only for your own well-being but show your children how important they can be for their own self-care.
